The 7 most common CV mistakes
In short: Most CVs fail because of avoidable little things, not a lack of skill: tasks instead of results, a wall of skills without context, too much length, generic content, dead links, typos, and no common thread. A quick 10-minute check against these seven points — fixing even two or three — sets you apart noticeably.
- Tasks instead of results. "Responsible for…" says nothing. Show what came out of it.
- A wall of skills without context. 40 technologies in a row look arbitrary. Group and prioritize.
- Too long. Nobody reads three pages. Condense to what's relevant.
- Generic for everyone. The same CV for every role — at least adapt the title and short profile.
- Unclear links. Dead GitHub links or an empty profile hurt more than no link.
- Typos & inconsistency. Different date formats, careless errors — it looks sloppy. Read it aloud once.
- No common thread. If it's unclear where you're heading, nobody can place you. A clear focus helps.
